Co-sponsored by the Southern California Society for
Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy and the New
Center for Psychoanalysis, Los Angeles

Treating  Challenging Patients With Brief, Intensive Therapy:
Two Audio-Visual Demonstrations

The program will begin with a brief overview of ISTDP principles, and then each of the presenters will offer a lecture with video demonstration of working with a challenging patient. Dr. Wolff will present excerpts from a successful 18 session treatment of a man with disturbing rage towards his child.   Dr. Kay will present excerpts from a clinical case demonstrating how complex feelings related to attachment ruptures are accessed and processed within a brief intensive model of psychotherapy. The faculty will invite discussion with the audience to deepen understanding of the processes demonstrated. Note: Confidential clinical material will be presented; therefore, this program is limited to licensed/ registered clinicians and those enrolled in a certified training program.

Learning Objectives:

• Review foundations of ISTDP, including "triangle of conflict" work.

• Explain the Attachment Theory view of the development of
secure and  insecure attachments.

• Explain the concept of turning super-ego struggle into Unconscious Therapeutic Alliance.

• Learn ways to fortify desire and hope in overcoming resistance to self-destructive impulses.

•Learn techniques to build upon patient strengths in the battle against the defenses.
